IWA created IWA academy with the goal of leveraging the expertise and experience of IWA member families in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and interacting with children to promote STEM education in the Greater Lafayette community. As a first step, we offer science demonstrations at Imagination Station.( http://www.imagination-station.org/)
The target audience is ages 10 and under. All that is required from you for a demo is a maximum of 2 hours for preparation and another 2-hours for the actual demo on any Saturday morning of your choice. A can-do spirit and love of children is more important than deep scientific knowledge. Simple hands-on experiments and interactive demos work well. We have seen eager and curious children whose faces light up as they simultaneously have fun throwing a paper airplane and learn concepts of velocity and force, or isolate DNA like high tech scientists. We would like the demo days to occur twice a month.
IWA family youth, 12 years and above, here is a chance to volunteer and make a difference in your community, while gaining presentation skills, doing fun experiments and gaining valuable volunteer hours for college applications! We will provide mentors for you.
Purdue Faculty and your connections, here is a chance to volunteer and make a difference in your community, while helping your grant applications! IWA youth volunteers can help you.
