When the COVID-19 pandemic started and schools and universities shut down in mid-March 2020, we had no idea of the scope of the issue: how long it would last, how it would affect people in different ways, etc. By the end of March, an IWA member had the idea of sending e-cards to nursing care facilities that were on lockdown and where residents could not have any visitors. Thus began the We Care E-Cards project of the IWA Academy. Since that small beginning at the end of March, IWA members have contributed in many ways: by having their children send e-cards, by providing contact information for local nursing homes, by organizing and sending e-cards weekly to various facilities, and by “marketing” the project to encourage the submission of more e-cards. Through these efforts, we are in Week 19 of sending weekly e-cards, we have sent e-cards to 6 local nursing care facilities and both local hospitals, and we have received e-cards from children of IWA members as well as non-members in the community and from as far away as New York. We have received 150 e-cards from 18 different children, and the project is still ongoing!! Here is an article that Franciscan Health wrote about our efforts: please keep sending those e-cards, and if you have not sent any yet, you can still start: just send them to iwaacademyecards@gmail.com
